Throughout the Rams off-season and training camp thus far, there's been multiple large stories. Whether it be Davante Adams thriving in the LA environment under HC Sean McVay, or late round/undrafted gems like Konata Mumpfield, Willie Lampkin and Shaun Dolac.
There's one story that stands out above the rest of them though, the biggest one; Matthew Stafford's lingering back injury, here's a timeline of updates to the situation.
July 22nd
Before the first day of 2025 Los Angeles Rams training camp officially kicked off at LMU, Sean McVay spoke to the press and dropped the bombshell that starting quarterback Matthew Stafford would miss the first week of camp because of apparent 'back soreness'.
He states that keeping him off the field is simply a precautionary measure, and that the quarterback has dealt with similar issues before. He also states that Stafford will work by himself for this portion of camp.
Notably, he mentions that the plan is for Stafford to return to regular practice the following Monday.
July 26th
Only a few short days later, McVay adjusts the timeline for Stafford's return, now referencing that he will be 'week-to-week', but stresses that there has been no setback and it continues to be precautionary. He emphasizes that Stafford will be ready for Week 1 vs. Houston.
By this time, fans are beginning to question the reliability of McVay's words. Long time fans can remember him saying similar things about Todd Gurley. These concerns are dismissed by the majority, as well as the media.
July 29th
Speaking to the media on July 29th, McVay updated on the situation, now referencing that Matthew Stafford was working directly with the Rams VP of Sports Medicine and Performance, Reggie Scott as well as spinal specialist Dr. Robert Watkins.
McVay stated that there was a long-term plan for the quarterback, and that his health had to prioritized, especially after the plethora of injuries he had suffered throughout his career.
It finally began to set in for a lot of Rams fans, this may be a lot more severe than originally though.
August 5th
A report came out from Adam Schefter of ESPN, he wrote that the Rams were not 'overly concerned' about the injury. He also stated that it seemed to be more 'maintenance' for the veteran than anything else.
Schefter said that the team was under the impression that Stafford would be able to play if there had been a game scheduled that day.
August 6th
Finally, after weeks of uncertainty, Stafford was finally diagnosed. Reports from Ian Rapoport came out that the quarterback had suffered an aggravated disc. He had also received an epidural to help to manage the pain.
This was something, but not exactly a positive development. An aggravated disc is much more than simple 'back soreness', and Rams fans continued to grow more worried.
August 7th & August 9th
Finally, Head Coach Sean McVay provided an encouraging update. He clued in on a 'throwing session' that Stafford would undergo on August 9th. He said that if the session goes to plan, Stafford will return to practice the following Monday.
The day rolled around, and Stafford successfully took part in the session, throwing over 60+ passes. McVay said he looked the player that they had come to know, referencing that the quarterback hadn't lost his touch.
August 11th
On the Monday, reports arose that Matthew Stafford was not present at practice. Sean McVay spoke to the media, saying that the quarterback simply 'hadn't felt good enough' to practice. Instead, Matthew spent the day in an Ammortal Chamber.
The Ammortal Chamber is supposedly a scientifcally backed technology, supplying therapies to quote 'help you become limitless' (we'll be the judge of that, if Stafford suddenly becomes as good of a scrambler as Lamar Jackson).
Hopefully this was useful to help keep fellow Rams fans in the loop, a simple article to get you up-to-date on the situation.
With any luck, Matthew Stafford will soon return to practice.
